Discussion:
Why is the Database Daemon running when a new session or reboot is launched

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Every now and then, the database Daemon launches when I start a new session or reboot, do a system cleanup with Cocktail or just repair permissions.

It gobbles up a lot of CPU and sometimes it just seems that nothing is happening (looking into Activity Monitor shows the MIcrosoft database Daemo in "red" , i.e not responding); this can last quite long. Eventually, the MDD window shows progress bars.

Very annoying when you log in and need to send an email urgently (with your boss waiting for you impatiently).

If it does this every time I log in, does it mean I need to do some maintenance on the database?

Thank you.

If you are deleting the Spotlight cache files, then the daemon is having
to recreate all your files again.

Thanks, but I don't see how that helps me (I was aware of that information).

There is only one Microsoft Database Daemon in my login items,I am not using Office Reminders and I am not using Spotlight to search Entourage (I turned off the feature in Entourage Prefs).

I rebuilt my Database last evening; it took a very long time (more than an hour, in fact I just let it run all night so I'm not sure how long it took). This morning it was done, so I logged out and logged back in... and the Daemon started again (after afew minutes it showed as "non-responsive" in Activity Monitor so I had to force quit it.

I then had to leave so I put the computer to sleep (to avoid logging out and in) and when I woke it up, I tried to start Entourage; the Daemon started again, but this time it executed in a few minutes and Entourage is running normally.

I don't understand why it behaves like this.

Thanks.

I think I have now solved the problem. I ran Disk Warrior (it repaired " an incorrect value in the volume information") and the problem disappeared. I don't know how this problem was created as I don't have any other problem. I hope this helps other users.
Thanks.
